Tor

Tor lets you reach your MyNode from anywhere without exposing it to the open internet. The node publishes itself as a hidden service, reachable at an onion address, and connections arrive through the Tor network rather than through a port you had to open on your router.

That covers more than the web interface. Your MyNode's apps and wallets are reachable this way, and so are Bitcoin Core and LND directly, which means a desktop or mobile wallet can connect to your own node over Tor from a coffee shop as easily as from your living room. Nothing about the arrangement requires a static IP, dynamic DNS, or port forwarding.

There is a privacy benefit in the other direction too. Your node can make its own outbound connections over Tor, so the peers it talks to on the Bitcoin network do not learn your home IP address, and the transactions your node broadcasts cannot be traced back to your physical location by an observer watching the network.

The tradeoff is speed: onion routing adds latency, so a Tor connection feels slower than a local one. For checking on your node and using its apps this is rarely a problem, and for the initial blockchain sync it is usually better to be on your local network.

Tor is developed by the Tor Project, a nonprofit whose stated mission is advancing human rights and freedoms through free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies.
