About
The VPN service on MyNode runs an OpenVPN server directly on your device, giving you a secure way to reach your node from anywhere. Once connected, your phone, tablet, or laptop behaves as though it were on your home network, with full access to the node's web interface and every app running on it.
Because the tunnel terminates on hardware you own, this is a meaningfully different proposition from a commercial VPN subscription. There is no provider in the middle logging where you connect from or what you reach — the server is yours, running on your node, and the only people using it are the ones you issue configuration files to.
The benefits extend past node access. While connected, traffic between your device and your node is encrypted and hidden from whatever local network you happen to be on, which is worth having on public wifi at an airport, a hotel, or a cafe, where the network operator and everyone else on it would otherwise be able to observe a good deal about your connection.
OpenVPN is mature, widely audited, and has clients for every platform you are likely to use, so connecting is a matter of importing a configuration file once and then toggling a switch.
